Juneau Icefield Traverse May 2024

        Logistics were falling into place like fingers into a wet glove - nicely as long as you push past a few snags. The border guards hadn’t seemed to notice or care that there were three of us in a van with two seatbelts, or that we were packing a plethora of foreign fruits, vegetables and meats en route to Skagway from Whitehorse. The ferry terminal had free long term parking, the Skagway library had free unlimited wifi, the two blokes we met on the ferry offered up free beta for our trip, and the helicopter pilot in Juneau had an endless stream of free pessimism. The weather looked, as Joe would say, “grim”. Unfortunately for us, grim is not the forecast that makes you say “woohoo! let's hop in a helicopter and fly onto a big white icefield where the distinction between sky and ground is challenging even when the sun is shining”.      So we were grounded.
